Yeah you're right. Hagel is a bit of a stretch. But he's "gimlet eyed" about the whole neocon movement and wing-nut take over of the GOP. On the whole, while I disagree with him on some issues, generally I think he's a pretty civil, reasonable and principled guy.

As for the Dem Party Powerful... they have lost election after election and need to get thrown out on their asses... McAuliffe and that whole brand of back-room, knuckle-dragging political thuggery. They beat the shit out of each other, but then roll over and play dead for the Republicans. They've proven spineless on every issue of any importance and kept the party locked in defeat mode for way too long... they need to step aside or get shoved aside.

Webb was my first bet, too, but there's a lot of weirdness and a paper trail that seems to be a problem. I agree on the change thing as a problem with Biden, but then it may be what the doctor ordered to relax the party powerful.

As far as Hagel, he's very pro-life and still a mainstream Repub on a host of other issues. We'd be looking for someone who would be set to step in 8 years from now or someone like Cheney who would not even consider.

Besides, wasn't Karl Marx a member of the Young Hagelians?

Actually... how about Chuck Hagel?... anybody? I definitely see Hagel as cabinet materials... but any chance of an Obama-Hagel ticket? Or is that just too far out there. Does anybody think Hagel would break from the GOP and go independent? Would he need to?

Oooooh.... damn! Steve went even further out than I did! Not sure about the whole VP thing. Although it does make sense. All the conservative pandering and religiosity shores up McCain with the Huckabee crowd.

I don't see Biden though. He's too much of a Washington insider for someone running on "change... Biden's not Southern enough, has no military credentials, and can't get that "white working class" vote that Hillary claims is the key to the election. And if Obama got tagged as elitist, Biden will get hammered on it.

I would have put my money on Jim Webb, if he wasn't so vulnerable on women's issues. But let's hope Obama picks someone just as tough. He's going to need all the brass he can get to take on the GOP machine... brass balls as well as knuckles.

Agree. Made the same call myself back in January over at the Playground and got a lot of flack for it, but my guess it is on the money. He placates the right while appealing to the center.

That's why my money right now is on Biden as Obama's veep -- they want someone who would be an effective pitbull against McCain and Lieberman.
